Why “Solo: A Star Wars Story” isn’t really about Han. It’s about Qi’ra.

            We know Han. We have known him a very long time. “Solo: A Star Wars Story” shows us his beginnings, but it really doesn’t tell us anything we don’t already know about him. Han doesn’t change that much from when we first meet him in the opening of this film to the Han we know in “The Force Awakens”. Even in the brilliant scene that sparks the movie to life when he hot-wires a speeder, he is the Han we already know and love: He’s a risk-taker. He’s good with mechanics. He’s a hustler.
            And he has a heart of gold. In later years, he hides this from others, even from himself, but right from the beginning, with his vow to come back for Qi’ra, and the sacrifice he makes for her by volunteering for the Empire’s army, we see he is inherently good.
            When he manages to snag a cylinder of the hyperfuel coaxium to enable his and Qi’ra’s escape and talks his way past the Imperial border guard, we are shown he is a capable scam artist. (But we already knew that.). And we see he’s an audacious pilot willing to take crazy risks. The aborted attempt to escape by turning the speeder sideways through a narrow channel of the city’s guts is an early echo of the many later close calls we’re already familiar with.
            Many other of his exploits are recognized, much to the delight of the audience. Connections are made through one-line references that are anything but throwaway. Canon we thought had died when Disney took the reigns of the franchise is carefully woven back into the story and given new life. Of course, the ultimate fan fave is when we get to actually see Han do the Kessel Run in 12 parsecs, the Solo fabled claim-to-fame. (Even if this is impossible, since parsecs measure distance not time. But who am I to call him on that technicality.)
            But all of this is old news. We have grown up with Han. We already know about his idiosyncrasies and love him all the more for them. It really doesn’t matter how they started. It only matters that it shaped him to become the scoundrel that stole all our hearts. What the movie really does is reconfirm our belief in him. Do we really need to see him give the coaxium to Enfys Nest? No, not really. The selfless part of him has already been shown to us in “A New Hope” when he comes back to help Luke destroy the Deathstar. And penultimately, when he gives his life to try and save Kylo Ren’s soul. “Solo” isn’t covering new ground. It is a tribute to our hero, and a convincing reaffirmation of Han as a person, to any doubters still out there.
            It is Qi’ra’s transformation that matters most in “Solo”, not Han’s. Her story arc is extreme, whereas Han pretty much stays the same from the beginning of the movie to the end. He sacrifices in the beginning, and he sacrifices at the end. He is always the good-hearted con artist and “the best pilot in the galaxy”. But Qi’ra’s turn is way more dramatic. She is the character in the movie that truly surprises us. Not Beckett. He is more predictable than he’d like to believe, as Han so observantly learns. It is Qi’ra that delivers all the shockers.
            She starts out as a loving girlfriend standing in the shadows while Han pulls off the heist and confronts Lady Proxima. She hangs on with gritted teeth as Han makes a wild escape in the speeder. We have the first inkling that she might be more than just a love-interest when confronting the guard at the border gate; she is as good at keeping a Sabacc face as Han. Yet when she is taken away by the Stormtroopers, we fear for her and wonder what will happen to her. She is helpless to get away. We assume she is going to be put in prison or forced to work in a labor camp, or even killed.
            When we first see her again with Dryden Vos, we believe she is being held against her will. She has been branded, forced to behave or face punishment. She tells Han that she has “done things”. But he, and we, are ready to forgive any transgressions she might have committed believing that they were done in order to stay alive. Yet we wonder. She must have been terribly strong and played her role pretty damn well to have gotten as far as she has – dressed to the nines, drinking goblets of expensive liquor with the top dog aboard a luxurious pleasure yacht.
            She plays her role well. She goes with Han because her master orders her to, and Han thinks he has received a windfall. We see her dreamy-eyed among Lando’s capes, looking to all the world like a street urchin who has never touched finery before. Easily enough, she is ready to melt with Han into a kiss, but we don’t get to see whether it’s true love, or if she is just toying with him, because the job interrupts.
            We are tossed a misdirection when it becomes apparent she is not very adept at co-piloting (no, she is not another Rey). She easily vacates the seat for Chewie, and this leads us to believe that she is meek, willing to take a back seat to those in charge.
            But on the mining planet, we see she really is as good a player as Han. We scarcely notice a flinch as the doors close on her and the mine operative. Then all we see is a flying red cape and dead bodies. She can hold her own. Perhaps we don’t really know her as well as we think we do.
            And she’s good with electronics. She neatly connects L3-37’s brain into the Millennium Falcon, no questions asked. Perhaps she’d always been an equal partner in Han’s earlier exploits, not just his love interest as we were led to believe.
            When Qi’ra and Han return with the coaxium for Vos, we think she is on Han’s side, working the scam with him, even if we aren’t yet totally sure what that is. Even Vos seems to think she’s gone against his wishes. But when she picks up the vibro blade, we begin to wonder. Is she just defending herself? After all, she is hiding, trying to stay out of the fight. Yet there is something in her look and posture that makes us suspicious. When she jumps into the fray, we realize she wasn’t kidding about the things she said she’d done. She takes out Vos neatly and with no qualms. But we still want to believe. She is doing it for Love. For Han. Those huge gems sitting there like paperweights entice us as much as they do Han (even if they do look like big chunks of glass).
            The weird thing is that Han willingly leaves her behind. He seems to believe she still loves him, but he shuts the door on her of his own accord this time. Has he already realized in his heart who she has become? She says she’s right behind him, then what is she waiting for? Why doesn’t she just take the prize and run with him like she did three years ago?
            Wait, what is she doing? Why isn’t she gathering up the gems? Who is she calling?
            Holy, shit!!!! It’s Maul!!!!!!!!!!! The villain we love to hate, and admit, we love. And Qi’ra isn’t just scamming him; she’s giving herself to him. When we watch the red light of a Dark-Side lightsaber flickering in her eyes, we know we’ve been had. Was she playing Han and Vos the whole time? Just biding her time to get what she really wanted?
            This movie wasn’t about Han. Not really. We already knew everything we needed to know about him. This movie was about a young woman we had never met before, someone who Han loved, turning to the Dark Side.
            When discussing the film with my Liningup.net friends after we saw it for the first time at the Mann’s Chinese Theater IMAX, the question was floated whether or not there would be a “Solo 2”. The consensus was there was no need for it. From here, “A New Hope” picks up pretty seamlessly. We don’t really need to see any more of Han’s exploits, fun as they might be.
            But the tale doesn’t seem over. Could a movie featuring Dark Side characters be in the works? Don’t you want to see on the big screen what happened to Maul in all those years between when he was sliced in half by Obi-Wan and now? I do. Perhaps the tales of Maul that were relegated to Legends can now become canon again, too. Then that begs the question, how does Qi’ra fit into that grander scheme? What role does she have to play in the future of the Dark Side in the new Star Wars empire?

Comic-con or Bust

You’re not really going to put yourself through it again, are you? You are a serious glutton for punishment. How many years in a row has it been now? It’s become an addiction for you, like an alcoholic who very clearly remembers the heavy, cement-stuffed pounding of being unable to lift his head off the bed the morning after but still picks up a bottle again at the end of the day.

You’ll drag yourself out of the hotel room at 6 a.m. and forge your way through the streets packed with shoulder-to-shoulder crowds while being buffeted by 8-foot Pikachu, ratcheting Steampunk wings, enormous fantasy-sized 3-D printed missile launchers, Aliens and Transformers who can hardly see where they’re going or control their enormous robotic feet. You’ll be jabbed by convention bags as big as coffee tables stuffed with action figures and lightsabers and memorabilia while people with smart phones and cameras with lenses as long as their forearms stop abruptly in front of you as they try to take a picture of that girl dressed (barely) as Poison Ivy or that guy with buffed up pecs and biceps wearing a white wife beater and long silver adamantine claws sprouting from between his fingers sharp enough to slice your hand off even though they’ve supposedly gone through weapons check.

Don’t you remember the stifling proximity of 150,000 people giving off body heat and pheromones pressing through the narrow rows of vendor booths gawking at every newly rolled out piece of merchandise while disrupting the natural flow of walking so that you have to dodge through the crowd with your shoulders hunched forward to block any blows coming your way? Maybe you should wear a costume that has a shield this year. Maybe Captain America’s got the right idea. Then there’s the sensory overload of loud speaker announcements, the crazed screaming of celebrity sightings, billboard size posters sprouting from floor and ceiling like a nightmare obstacle course, and the endless neon-lit displays of high-end action figures, weapons, toys, props crushing your senses until you feel your head swimming with flashbacks of previous cons.

Do you really need to relive the grind of walking miles and miles each day from one end of the building to the other and back again and again on the off-chance that you’ll get into the panels you want even though you know that unless you get there at least two hours ahead of time there’s no chance at all? At least you’ve learned not to wait in line for eight hours straight for the Masquerade. You can just go have dinner then slip into the back of the auditorium where there are always empty seats and multiple large screens to watch the same hosts as last year, and the year before that, make jokes about the costume descriptions, and you join in the countdown as people in costumes that have taken them a year to make act out their bits to pre-recorded audio and get cheered or booed by the ravenous audience. Or you could watch it on a big screen in the tent where it’s easy to get a seat, but it’s so f-ing cold that you’ll probably catch pneumonia after sweating your ass off all day.

Your feet still remember the swollen ache from last year as you shift uselessly from one leg to the other to alleviate the pain of standing on them hour after hour as you wait in line in the scorching hot sun hoping upon hope that you make it into Hall H to see the Star Wars Panel. And this after you voluntarily slept all night sitting up in a camping chair just to get a seat halfway back in a 7,000 person auditorium to see a panel of actors bandy about some jokes as you watch them on a screen above your head, because even though they are up there on the stage, they are too far away to make out any facial features. Packed tightly into an unmovable metal chair surrounded by stinking people who haven’t bathed, you get to eat bad convention pizza that contains thousands of calories and untold grams of fat while watching a five minute movie preview that you’ll be able to see on YouTube in two months time. Is it really worth it to be the first to post about it on Twitter?

Here is an article I wrote and a book I designed for TheOneRing.net – one of the world’s foremost Tolkien-related websites.

It’s been almost a year since The One Last Party, but we haven’t forgotten it, and we didn’t want Peter Jackson to think we’d forgotten about him either. As you may remember, one of the promises we made on the Indiegogo campaign was that we would send Peter a “thank you” card. To be exact, we said, “Your name will go on an EPIC ‘thank you’ card we will present or send to Peter Jackson, from fans everywhere, to express our appreciation for the immense effort he and his cast and crew have put into the epic journey of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films.”

After the campaign ended, the TORn staff began brainstorming how to get all the names on one card – there were a lot of them! We decided to create a keepsake ‘Red Book’ for Peter. TORn staffer and designer, Mithril (Nancy Steinman), found a gorgeous leather journal and then designed and illustrated the interior pages and bound them into the book. Out of the 194 pages of the journal, 180 of them were the list of names!

Peter now has his journal, but we thought all of you deserved something to remember that fantastic night, too (besides your gift bags), so Mithril reached out with some questions to one of the party planners who was absolutely instrumental in making the party happen. Why “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” Isn’t Really a Game Changer

Neither Rey nor Finn were the first.

So many articles about Star Wars: The Force Awakens are saying things similar to the following statement, but it is blatantly untrue:

“There’s an obvious inclusivity mission in these [new] films that wasn’t present in the originals, where women and people of color are on the front lines.” (The Verge)

It makes me wonder why these bloggers are completely disregarding the original movies. Most likely they are jumping on the PC bandwagon in order to get more attention. I am all for equality, and the recent revelations about pay inequity and the lack of good roles for actresses makes me as angry as the next woman, but in my opinion, George Lucas was ahead of the curve when it came to filling important roles in film.

Leia Organa (born Leia Amidala Skywalker). Should be enough said, but apparently, it’s not. How can you say there were no female heroes in the original films in the light of her glare. Played by Carrie Fisher, Leia was a female leading hero on the front lines in all three of the original movies, the first of which was released in 1977. Her role was every bit as significant as Luke and Han’s if not more so.

Leia was the Princess of Alderaan, one of the core world planets with a population of 2 billion. Decades before Disney princesses showed that girls can be strong, she was a member of the Imperial Senate and the leader of the Rebel Alliance. It was Leia who led the plan to destroy the Death Star. Luke, a farm boy, and Han, a smuggler, were drawn into her orbit, not the other way around. If you think Luke is more significant because he became a Jedi, don’t forget Leia had the same parents as Luke, and as Yoda said, the same force potential… “there is another”. And she was kick ass handy with a blaster.

“But it is she who leads the battle, yes, hmm…Princess Leia Organa. Bold. Strong…her mother’s blood flows through her.”

Another strong female in the original Star Wars Saga was Mon Mothma. We see her briefly before the Battle of Endor, but she is a significant leader in the resistance and becomes the first chancellor of the New Republic.

As far as “people of color” having important roles in the original movies, what about Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian? The Trilogy would have been a different universe without him. If you know anything about Lando, you’ll know he is a powerful man in the verse.

Although he never actually got screen time, it really didn’t matter; the voice of Darth Vader, James Earl Jones, pervaded the first three films and is one of the most iconic things about the Star Wars films universe.

Episodes 1-3 are not given much love, and this may have diminished their characters in film goers’ eyes, but they also had heroes of significance.

PadmeLeaderPadme is the Queen of the planet Naboo, a strategic leader and a commander.

Padmé Amidala, played by Natalie Portman, has a resumé that could arguably surpass Leia’s, which would make sense since she was Leia’s (and Luke’s) mother. She was the Princess of Theed, the capital city of the planet Naboo, and was elected Queen of the planet at the age of 14! She led her people during the Trade Federation’s invasion of the planet and helped to liberate them, becoming one of the most respected political figures in the galaxy. When her two terms as Queen were over, her people tried to pass a law so she could continue as Queen, but she declined and accepted the position as Naboo’s senator in the Galactic Senate. She was politically savvy, a leader and a fighter, in the senate and on the battle field. She could also wield a mean blaster. Neither were Episodes 1-3 devoid of important characters of color. Captain Panaka who was the head of the Royal Naboo Security Forces was played by Hugh Quarshie, and the character people love to hate, Jar Jar Binks, was voiced by Ahmed Best. And how dare we forget the great Mace Windu played by Samuel L. Jackson!

With Star Wars, George Lucas created films (and books) that were infinitely diverse. There are many strong female heroes to aspire to – in fact, one of the most inspirational in film history. Go to Comic-con and count how many Leia’s you see walking around if you have doubts. And there was racial diversity – including alien races – long before Episode VII which only continues the legacy and doesn’t invent it. Rey and Finn are new heroes for sure, but they are not the first, nor the most significant.

Now that Wyrdcon 6 is finally upon us (Yay!), I thought I’d post something I wrote after Wyrdcon 5. I hope it conveys some of the unrestrained exuberance of the weekend. But there are also more studious tracks, for those less inclined to wildness.

Once upon a time in a magical land called Los Angeles in a castle called The Westin where the good king Ira Ham ruled, a group of storytellers gathered for a five-day adventure. On the last weekend of the month of Mayday, they came from far and wide – flying on giant silver eagles or driving chariots of steel.

Once their trunks, stuffed to the brim with enough costumes to last a week (or more), had been unpacked, and their foam weapons stowed, they gathered in Limbo. There they raised a toast to the days to come – days to be filled with merriment and magic, battles and bofurs, LARPs and ARGs and a live arcade game. And stories, of course.

From the moment the adventure began until the final farewell, sleep was in short supply. There were just way too many enticing activities to fill the hours. Even though time travel was part of the package, it could not meet the demand of trying to be in two places at once. And so the attendees made their choices and then put heart and soul into whatever they participated in. Like the arcade; a live action puzzle-solving, story unfolding maze.

The walls between the worlds grew thin as the days wore on. Warriors roamed the halls as war cries rang out and swords clashed. Dystopia rose. Battles broke out in Belegarth. Wizards cast mighty spells to rid the realm of ghosts and demons. Fairytale characters held court. Andy Warhol and Frank Sinatra debated and sang karaoke. Pirates sailed the seven seas. Meanwhile in the farthest realm of the future, the Oculus Rift was encountered at the unthinkable complexity of a cyber ball. And somewhere a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, Jedi and smugglers roamed the Court of the Hutt. And the bloody arcade vexed us. Again.

From room to room, from world to world, we slipped in an out of character. We slept on bean bags and had cobalt nightmares or dreamed of battle in Lannerea. We crafted armor and living dreams. We puzzled over clues, flew on a Starship and left the “real” world behind.

There was discourse on matters of utmost import from renowned storytellers such as Jim Butcher, Todd McCaffrey and Barri Evins. Technical wizardry was demystified by Conducttr Robert Pratten and AIL Fellow Geoffrey Long. And stories were mystified by True Thomas.

And we listened, rapt. And we fought with mad abandon. And we danced in El Wire trances. And we gambled with our imaginations…

and won friendships. And we took home transmedia memories and killer ideas for LARPs and ARGs – and arcades. Enough to do it all over again next year. Which seems ever too far away in the distant future.

Middle-earth Fans: Dressing the Part

The history of costume is long and detailed, a tale that can only be unraveled with much research and knowledge, not only of fashion, but of geography, politics and court intrigue. It has subtle influences on society that are lost on much of the modern world. But in Middle-earth, what one wears is greatly determined not only by which race you are, but where you hail from and the type of lifestyle you lead. Elves from Rivendell wear styles different from those of Lothlórien or the Greenwood. The garb of men from Gondor, Rohan, and Harad are all quite different. There is even a distinction between what the Rangers of the north and south wear. Hobbits have a style all their own, as do Wizards. And the dark forces are completely different again.

While Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Phillipa Boyens were still penning ideas to bring their vision of The Lord of the Rings to the big screen, others were already busy sketching and designing the garments that would clothe the characters they would bring to life. For Academy Awards® winner Richard Taylor, co-founder and creative director of Weta Workshop, and costume designer Ngila Dickson, there was no detail too small to be overlooked, from the hair on Hobbit feet to the intricately etched designs on armor and everything in-between (and over-and-above).

As the first trailers and stills for The Fellowship of the Ring hit the theaters and the internet, a new wave of costumers was born. Images of leather bracers and flowing velvet sleeves sparked the imagination of both men and women, many who had never picked up a sewing needle before.

Maggie Allen, a costumer who founded and runs “The Costumer’s Guide,” a well-respected costuming reference website, says that the costumes in the Star Wars prequels and The Lord of the Rings were “the one-two punch that got so many people into costuming.” She adds, “I can’t think of any other movies at that time that were so seminal in inspiring so many people to costume.” One of Allen’s favorites? Arwen’s “blood red” dress, which wowed fans from the moment it was seen in the first trailer. Designed by Dickson, it’s probably one of the most re-created costumes from The Lord of the Rings films. Speaking about the fans embracing her costume designs for the movie, Dickson said, “That is fantastic, because you cannot imagine how terrifying it was some days, when we would be looking at something and saying, ‘Is this what everybody sees in their mind’s eye?’” (From The Lord of the Rings Fan Club Official Movie Magazine, Issue No. 3)

For myself, when I saw a picture of Éowyn’s shieldmaiden dress, I had to try and recreate it. The pale flowing gown, the sleeves bound with cording, and the leather bodice were exquisitely rendered, but it was the costume’s embodiment of the heroine’s combination of vulnerability and strength that made it even more compelling. Without having a pattern, using pieces of other garments for the lining, I created and quilted the corset and then modified an existing pattern to make the dress. I hadn’t sewn anything more complicated than pillow covers since sixth grade home economics class. My experience was a story I heard repeated over and over as I interviewed other costumers.

Above and Beyond

At San Diego Comic-con this year, I spent a good deal of time at the Weta Workshop booth where several of the other TheOneRing.net staffers were working and hanging out. The copy of “The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey Chronicles: Creatures & Characters” that I bought turned out to be my best purchase of the con. Some of the artists who worked on the film took turn signing, going above and beyond by personalizing their signatures with drawings as well. By waiting patiently for all the artists to show up, I ended up with a treasure. Thanks to all the amazing Weta artists who took the time!
